Coffins - Buried Death (2008)

Coffins give you a flash from the past playing death/doom that was once very common in the old school, and do a damn good job at it. This album is very heavy with slow crushing riffs and one helluva gritty production that only adds to the overall kickass-ness of this album. Very good for newer death metal.

Iced Earth - Framing Armageddon (2007)/The Crucible of Man (2008)

Let's go back in time for a little while. It's 1997 and Iced Earth has just released their fifth full-length album Something Wicked This Way Comes. The last three tracks tell the story of Set Abominae and the rise and fall of mankind entitled Something Wicked. These three tracks have a total playing time of about 20 minutes.

Now let's go back to 2008. Last year Iced Earth released Framing Armageddon, the first album of two that tell an expanded version of the Something Wicked story. Framing Armageddon tells the story up to the birth of Set Abominae. This album (as well as Iced Earth's previous album The Glorious Burden) features former Judas Priest singer, Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals.

In September of this year, Iced Earth will release the second and final part of Something Wicked, The Crucible of Man. The second album continues the story where Framing Armageddon left off and ends with the destruction of mankind at the hands of the Setian race. On this album, legendary singer Matt Barlow returns to take over for Ripper.

For the ultimate listening experience, play these two albums back to back. Trust me, it will be epic.

Oblomov - Mighty Cosmic Dances (2005)

Track list :

1. Into the R.O. 02:30
2. Mentality Failure 01:30
3. Redefination of the Past 05:15

6. 1 of the 4 04:58
7. Nostalgic Idealization 05:35
8. Dreamworks 05:34

This trio from Czech Republic play a good mix of black and melodic death metal with a touch of folk. Very energetic, this isn't the type of record you'd listen to once or twice, the riffs and melodies are very catchy especially on the first half of the album. You hear saxophone leads, flute and other instruments, but they match the aggressive, melodic and progressive song writing perfectly. This is their first full-length. Grab it you won't be disappointed.

Coffins

21) Cracks Of Doom
22) Ebony Tears

Enjoy!

(U.S.A./Japan) Brutal Death Metal

The Cracks Of Doom” places one of the best death metal bands in the world, the mighty Coffins, alongside hard-hitting porn grind upstarts XXX Maniak, whose sick and oozing-from-every-invaded-orifice brand of extreme death/grind must be heard to be appreciated.

The two songs from Coffins, including a blinding Cathedral cover, are worth the price of admission alone. Seriously, these guys can do no wrong and every single, album, EP and split they put their names to should be hunted down. Strangely, their pair of laid-back, smoking tunes - paying worthy homage to some of the best death metal of the 80's - last longer than all 20 of the XXX crews’ blasts put together. As for the Maniaks: in the best tradition of extreme death/grind, we get high-speed short, sharp shocks, churned out with incredible spontaneous intensity, complemented by a shitload of appropriate and often hilarious samples, which add extra charm to the steaming pile of political incorrectness.

Seriously, if you are not familiar with Coffins, get yourself educated on them because they are amazing!

Ophiolatry - Transmutation (2008)

Again, some of this year’s better death metal: Ophiolatry - bringing you brutal (but I’d say rather techy as well) death with similar intensity and awesomeness to that of Origin.

Neuraxis - The Thin Line Between (2008)

1) Darkness Prevails
2) Wicked
3) Versus
4) Deviation Occurs
5) The Thin Line Between
6) Dreaming the End
7) Standing Despite...
8) Oracle
9) Phoenix
10) The All and the Nothing

I'm not the biggest fan of tech death (aside from Arsis and Brain Drill) you'll meet, but I loved this album. Hell, I would even put it on the Best of 2008 list! The riffs are great, the drumming doesn't go overboard on double bass and blasting, the vocals mix with the rest of the instruments...What else can I say about this album?

The Thin Line Between is the only Neuraxis album I've listened to so far, but that's about to change.

Demolition Hammer - Necrology (Demo) 1989

Track Listing :

1. Crippling Velocity
2. Infectious Hospital Waste
3. .44 Caliber Brain Surgery
4. Neanderthal
5. Mercenary Aggression
6. Hydrophobia

I had no clue this was available in mp3 until two days ago when i found it online then cranked it and went "HOLY SHIT THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THEIR BEST". Well maybe not better than their second album but excellent nonetheless.
Again, authentic thrash: fast up and down beats, crushing riffs, blistering solos and even the vocals are pretty fucking good for a demo. Somehow New Yorkers are cut out for thrash, this sounds better than your favourite thrash band's demos that's for sure. If you're not exactly into the genre then dont bother. Otherwise enjoy.

Gortuary - Manic Thoughts Through Perverse Mutilation (2008)

2.Skull Fragments
3.Hereditary Retardation
4.Pedophilic Manipulation
5.Pool of Excrement
6.Transgender Dismember
7.Splatter Fecal Matter
8.Meat Grinder Homicide
9.Wake Up Murder

Prepare for Mutilation

(USA) Brutal Death Metal

With a little over a year of experience together as a band, Gortuary’s ability to eviscerate like a rusty chainsaw to the bowels is only matched (and exceeded) by their technical prowess. This California crew of five slam from downtuned riffs that surge with sludgy appeal to mind altering technical savagery. Thick crunchy bass rhythms permeate the air as drummer Josh’s aggressive and manic drum abuse cements the tone for guitarists Glen and Andre.

Both guitarists throw down crushing riffs at breakneck speeds with brutal results. Sludgy tones and an overwhelming flood of noise are accompanied by intestine twisting leads and hooks. Lead growler Oscar sounds as though he was nursed on battery acid as a pup. His deep guttural growls and gurgles pile drive home the band’s putrid and perversely vile lyrics all to the tune of slamming brutal death metal

Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes (1994)

Although they are a progressive metal band now, Amorphis was once a melodic death metal band (featuring keyboards of couse). And like every good band, they fuse elements of other genres into their music. In this case it's folk and doom metal. The title Tales From The Thousand Lakes is very appropriate considering that the lyrics on this album are based off of the Kalevala, a collection of Finnish folklore compiled by Elias Lönnrot and one of the most important pieces of Finnish literature. Take all of that stuff, put it all together, and you have a truly amazing album.

Fun Fact: Amorphis was the first band added to the Metal Archives.
...What's so fun about a fun fact?

1) Thousand Lakes

Wormphlegm "Tomb of the Ancient King" (2006)

Ugly, crushing doom metal.

For those looking to get into some serious funeral doom this side project from members of Tyranny (that would be "Maggotworm Incinerator Abscess"on drums and vocals and "Grubgorge Pestilent Diarrhoeator" bringing up guitar, bass and vocals) is a gut-wrenching exercise in raw atmosphere and overwhelming darkness.

Not for those looking for immediate gratification (the shortest song clocks in at over 13 minutes) but for the adventurous looking for a serious doom "experience" this album is a must.

The Monolith Deathcult - Trivmvirate (2008)

Now this was an interesting listen. Trivmvirate by The Monolith Deathcult brings us aggressive death metal with a kick of electronic influence. Clocking in at nearly an hour, this album is indeed a long one, but that doesn't mean it lags and could put you to sleep. While other brutal death metal of today capitalizes on the brutal trend, they don't all necessarily bring you quality death metal. Trivmvirate is one of the better albums that has come out this year IMO and catchy enough to pull you right in.

Severe Dementia - Epitaph of Plassey (2007)

1) Entombment of the Traitor
2) Credence of Fort William
3) The Bengal Regiment
4) Howls of Murshibad
5) Strangled by Treason and Forgery

Severe Dementia is a brutal/tech death metal band that adds a touch of melody and atmosphere to their music. The Epitaph of Plassey EP recollects the Battle of Plassey, a British victory over India which essentially set up the British Empire in India. Although they do not have much material yet, Epitaph of Plassey proves that Severe Dementia is one of the best Asian metal bands today. I highly recommend this to fans of Behemoth, middle era Death, and B to D era Morbid Angel. This EP was featured on the Rise of the Eastern Blood split album, which also featured Demonic Resurrection, a death/black/power/thrash band from India and Dusk, a death metal band from Pakistan.

Gojira - The Link (2003)

Track list :

1. Link, The
2. Death of Me
3. Connected
4. Remembrance
5. Torii
6. Indians
7. Embrace the World
8. Inward Momement
9. Over the Flows
10. Wisdom Comes
11. Dawn

Very groovy, heavy and moody. These French metalheads pull off an overall sound that's kind of hard to classify. This album is without a doubt their best to date. Gojira play a sort of progressive death metal that makes you feel like you're being stepped on by a giant, or punched in the face by hellboy. Very atmospheric, industrial, doomy, yet technical at times. The musiciaship is great. This is not music with solos or other instrumental noodling but rather a team effort with lots of groovy rythms and precise playing between the musicians. This band works like a machine. I would strongly recommend The Link Alive DVD, i got it a few days ago and i've been watching it everyday since.

Prostitute Disfigurement - Descendants Of Depravity

It's been roughly 3 years since these purveyors of the putrid violated listeners with an onslaught of sex, filth and head-bashing heaviness and the wait has been worth it.

"Descendants..." is a thick, powerful, brutal slab of death that showcases the boys at their most polished and technically proficient.

Be warned, when played at the right volume, "Descendants of Depravity" has been shown to cause spontaneous rectal bleeding in nuns, seniors and innocent woodland creatures.

Averse Sefira - Advent Parallax (2008)

Now here's some black metal up my alley. Adverse Sefira are one of those bands for notoriously having clean production and being quite riff-oriented as compared to alot of other black metal. To some, this might turn a few heads (those who like 1349 but basically no other black metal for example) and for good reason; these guys kick some serious ass.

Evile - Enter The Grave (2007)

Track list :

1. Enter the Grave
2. Thrasher
3. First Blood
4. Man Against Machine
5. Burned Alive
6. Killer From the Deep
7. We Who Are About To Die
8. Schizophrenia
9. Bathe In Blood
10. Armoured Assault

This record really speaks for itself. Young thrash band from England that released a debut in 2007 that sounds like it came 25 years too late. This is what thrash sounded like back then and what it should have always sounded like until now. Bands like Evile exist for that sake. Authentic thrash formula gives their sound an amazing punch that will keep you listening until the album is over. Bone-crushing riffs, simple flawless drum beats, blistering solos and slayeresque vocals that fit perfectly make Enter The Grave one of the best - if not the best - thrash album from last year. If you like thrash, grab this.

Mourning Beloveth - A Disease For The Ages (2008)

Mourning Beloveth, a doom/death metal band, are back again with another inspiring full-length album. MB have a depressive and sometimes epic sound in their music with death growls and occasional clean singing. I, not being a seasoned doom metal fan, found some incredible music here in this album and for a good taste of what they have to offer, check it out here - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=116377187 and see if you like it. Arsis - We Are The Nightmare (2008)

1) We Are The Nightmare
2) Shattering the Spell
3) Sightless Wisdom
4) Servants to the Night
5) Failing Winds of Hopeless Greed
6) Overthrown
7) Progressive Entrapment
8) A Fest For The Liar's Tongue
9) My Oath To Madness
10) Failure's Conquest

Melodic tech death band Arsis is back with another album. The band's 2008 release is certainly not as great as A Celebration of Guilt or A Diamond For Disease, but it is a large improvement on their last album United in Regret. The songwriting on We Are The Nightmare is less repetitive and the sound quality is much clearer. Overall, this album is not Arsis' best, but it is definitely not their worst.

Thorium "Feral Creation" (2008)

One of my favorite metal releases of 2008.

Thick, powerful riffs. Aggressive, but discernable growling vocals. Straight-forward, simple, but very effective song structure. Melodic, but far from "-core". A fantastic piece of old-school death metal with dashes of Swedish and American influence.

(Norway) Brutal Death Metal

It was merely a matter of time before I posted an album from a subgenre of metal that my heart truly lies with. Thanks to such blistering tracks like Perverted Sensation, Zombified Infanticide, and Shemale Throatfuck (my personal favorite), Kraanium's Ten Acts of Sickening Perversity album stands as one of the best gore/brutal releases for me this year. Don't worry, though; this gem only serves as a prelude to an onslaught of gore that I'm going to unleash upon you...

Emancer - Twilight and Randomness (2008)

1) Randomness
2) Dice Man
3) The Beast Attacks
4) The Pointing Finger
5) Comfort Fix
6) Twilight
7) Cunning Vital Guardian
8) Moron
9) The Rewarding Schemes
10) Winged Omniscience

Emancer plays their own brand of progressive/melodic black metal on Twilight and Randomness. The ambient intro track ("Randomness") is pretty normal. However, as soon as "Randomness" finishes, it fades right into "Dice Man," which is filled with melodic riffing, synth, and interludes with clean vocals. Emancer's fifth album also boasts of clean production. Although this description almost makes them seem to be the opposite of traditional black metal, Emancer manages to be as dark, brutal and raw as the rest of their genre.

Aborted - Strychnine.213 (2008)

01. Carrion
02. Ophiolatry
03. I35
04. Pestiferous Subterfuge
05. The Chyme Congeries
06. A Murmer in Decrepit Wits
07. Enterrement of an Idol
08. Hereditary Band
09. Avarice of Vilification
10. The Obfuscate

Gimme Gimme Gimme

(Belgium) Death Metal/Deathcore

I'll be honest. Aborted's new album Strychnine.213 is pretty decent, but it's nowhere near as good as an album like The Archaic Abattoir. In fact, this album almost seems like a direct continuation of their previous effort, Slaughter & Apparatus: A Methodical Overture. I know these guys are trying their damnedest to stop being compared to Carcass, but they can do it in a much better way than taking the deathcore route. Still, it's not a bad album and definitely worth a listen.

Immortal Souls - Wintereich (2007)

Chapter I – The Awakening

1. "Nightfrost" (4:25)
2. "Feareaper" (3:27)
3. "Frozen Inside" (3:12)

Chapter II – Reflections of Doom

4. "Icon of Ice" (3:43)
5. "Color of My Sky" (3:34)
6. "Constant" (3:29)

Chapter III – The Shadow of the Valley of Death

7. "Idlestate" (4:54)
8. "Heart of Cold" (4:07)

Chapter IV – The Passage

9. "Winter of My Discontent" (3:29)
10. "Black Water"(4:09)
11. "Wintereich" (6:54)

With this cd, they take the "Melodic" part of Melodic Death Metal very seriously, crafting some of the most melodic and catchy riffs in death metal you will hear. The instrumental work here is top notch, as is basically everything else here. The vocals are a higher pitched growl, akin to bands like Ensiferum, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, etc. Also, don’t give up on them just because they are a Christian band. They have demonstrated with their work, and especially with this cd, that they are much more than any of the other awful, and sometimes mediocre, Christian bands. I highly recommend them to anyone who is a fan of melodic death metal. It is fast, catchy, and generally awesome. I got this cd for Christmas, and I couldn't have been happier. Make sure you buy it!

Incantation - Onward To Golgotha (1992)

This is... eeeeeeeeevillll. Not to mention a great classic. Incantation helped lead the New York Death Metal scene along with fellow acts Immolation, Suffocation... you get the idea. Well, Incantation sought to bring a little more blasphemy and darkness into the mix. Onward to Golgotha is their first of many great albums and considered by many to be their best. The music is full of thundering dark (and definitely weird at times) atmosphere combined with echoing hate spewing from Craig Pillard's throat; yes, the vocals are top notch for the low guttural style that he brings to the table here. Overall, this album will kick you in the nuts and crush your skull... and hopefully compel you to seek Incantation's later albums.

Toxic Holocaust - Evil Never Dies

Track Listing:

1 Evil Never Dies
2 War Is Hell
3 Enemy of Jesus
4 Damned to Fire
5 Exxxecutioner
6 666
7 Summon The Beast
8 Demise
9 Warfare
10 Dead To The World
11 Fallout
12 Atomic Destruktor
13 Deathmaster
14 Metal Attack
15 Created To Kill

For a one man band, this is the best bullet-belt-high-top-kicks-leather-and-denim thrash you can get your hands on nowadays. I personally think it's a bit "blackened" but don't get me wrong, this is thrash more than anything else. Toxic Holocaust carry the grand tradition of Destruction, Kreator, Whiplash, and Bathory with songs about nuclear war, Satan, and other wholesome themes. Joel Grind is the only member of this "band," but this doesn't sound like a wimpy Pro-Tools vanity project, the sound is fully realized and Joel packs as much of a punch as any four or five leather clad heshers ever have.
Unlike a lot of thrash/speed bands, Joel writes catchy songs with plenty of hooks. Standout tracks include the seething mid-tempo "Summon The Beast" and headbanging anthem "Metal Attack". This is the soundtrack to getting ripped on magic marker fumes and cheap domestic beer in your parents' basement in 1986. Kills posers on contact.

I've Got to Have it!

(Greece) Death Metal

Here is a death metal band that truly appreciates the dark and atmospheric style of early 90's extreme metal. I'd venture to say that this is THE best underground metal release of 2008. Yeah, it's that good. Seriously though, check it out if you have no clue who this band is. They easily invoke some classic Immolation and are on par with several other modern day death metal bands like Necrocultus or Repugnant. Looking for catchy, cookie-cutter shit? You're not going to find it with this band. Remember, if you like it, buy it. Support this band so we can have more than just this and their EP (Purifying Consecrated Ground).

Amaseffer - Slaves For Life (2008)

1) Sorrow
2) Slaves For Life
3) Birth of Deliverance
4) Midian
5) Zipporah
6) Burning Bush
7) The Wooden Staff
8) Return to Egypt
9) Ten Plagues
10) Land of the Dead

Amaseffer's debut album is the first part in a trilogy of albums that tells the story of the Book of Exodus. However, don't let the biblical themes fool you into thinking that Amaseffer is just another mediocre Christian band. Amaseffer plays progressive metal with folk-ish and Middle Eastern influences. They can almost be described as a cross between Dream Theater and Orphaned Land.

Mats Leven of Therion performs lead vocals on Slaves For Life and Kobi Farhi of Orphaned Land does Middle Eastern style vocals. Also featured on the album are Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy and Israeli solo artists Maya Avraham and Yotam Avni.

Immolation - Close To A World Below

This is my first ever blog post so I thought I'd get straight to one of my favorite albums. This is Immolation's "Close To A World Below", one of the most crushing death metal albums ever that has already achieved "Classic" status among death metal fans (at least those who know what the fuck they're talking about). Close To A World Below has a sound structure and style that is to be found in very few other places. The riffing is typical of Immolation however atmosphere plays a big part in this album, adding to the overall dark and evil feel that is relentless from start to finish. The drumming, as in just about every other Immolation album, is just as fun to listen to as the guitars and vocals; speaking of vocals Ross Dolan arguably delivers his best work right here by bringing you solid death growls that are nothing but pure evil. All the way from "Didn't you say Jesus was coming?" to the ending apocalyptic riffs of the self-titled track this album gives the listener something that they will be coming back for time and time again. Enjoy.

Gama Bomb - Citizen Brain (2008)

Tracklist
01. Zombie Blood Nightmare
02. Evil Voices
03. Final Fight
04. Time Crime
05. Global Warming
06. OCP
07. Hammer Slammer
08. Sentenced to Thrash
09. Zombi Brew
10. Hell Trucker
11. Return of the Technodrome
12. Thrashaholic
13. In the Court of General Zod
14. Space Invaders
15. Bullet Belt

Earache doesn't stop to impress with all these young thrash bands out of the Untied Kingdom. "Nobody is bringing thrash back, thrash never left". What i liked most about this band is that they don't take themselves too seriously, which is reflected in some of their song lyrics. They love zombies . Other topics covered include sci-fi, horror and video games . Vocalist Philly Byrne delivers those lyrics in a spoken word hardcore style, but he has a falsetto that he belts out periodically that sets him apart from the usual thrash vocalist.
Gama Bomb delivered one of the most energetic records this year. It's full-on thrash, killer riff after killer riff. Leads full of flavor and an awesome snare sound won't fail to catch any real thrash fan's attention. Paying homage to bands like Nuclear Assault, Kreator and Anthrax; bay area and german thrash influences make this record easily one of the most old school sounding and authentic thrash albums this year.

(U.S.A.) Sludge/Grindcore/Death/Black Metal

This was a highly anticipated album for me. An extremely incredible follow-up to Withered's Memento Mori (all the way back in 2006!), Folie Circulaire possesses a huge lack of vocals this time around, causing the listener to really focus on their musicianship, which is amazing. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this album. Remember, if you like it, buy it. Support these bands while they are still around.

So this site isn't much right now, but we're working on getting everything organized, fixing up the layout, etc.

What we plan on doing here is posting the list of new releases for each week and posting a few of the albums with short reviews.
