The Ocean - Heliocentric (2010)

The Ocean takes a whole new musical direction on Heliocentric. This new album is much more diverse than the previous three albums. Heliocentric ranges from soft songs featuring piano to heavy sludge tracks. Although fluXion and the second disc of Precambrian have been described as atmospheric and symphonic, both are still rather abrasive and come nowhere close to the level that Heliocentric is on. The lyrics of this album revolve around a debate between science and religion, from the perspective of science. A follow-up album, Anthropocentric, which takes the religious point of view will be released later this year.

Excoriate - On Pestilent Wings... (2009)

Up until recently, I've been kind of disappointed with this years' death metal *coughallthecomebackalbumscough* and then I randomly run across this blistering thrashy death metal album! As far as what it sounds like, I'm pretty sure there's Vader influence as well as old school death/thrash. The vocals sound a lot like Martin van Drunen (Pestilence, Asphyx) which you gotta love as well. I'd recommend this, to me it's gotta be in the top 5 for this year's death metal.

Centaurus-A is a new death metal band on Listenable Records. Their debut Side Effects Expected is one of my favorite albums released this year. Centaurus-A, just like every other tech death band, shows extreme influence from Necrophagist, especially in the solos. However, these guys bring something else to the table: their brand of tech death is infused with a healthy dosage of thrash.

Alright, so this is Destruction's least successful, most misunderstood album. Why? Simply because Schmier isn't featured on it (vocals and bass). The musicianship is still top notch though, Mike Sifringer firing up some killer riffs. Compositionally the songs are pretty straightfoward and work well in a package. This can easily stand next to some of the greatest thrash releases that year, including Rust In Peace. Don't be a douche and avoid this for the one reason everybody has been avoiding it, give this a listen I promise you a good headbanging 40 minutes.

Destruction is one of the three thrash giants from Germany, and quite honestly the meanest of all. But unlike a lot of big thrash bands, Destruction had a strong come back in 2000 with All Hell Breaks Loose after many years of silence and line-up changes. Schmier and Mike are back together and ready to bleed your ears with authentic, loud and well produced german thrash. After such a great come back, they released what became their best album to date. With the exception of some 80's material, this album sets the bar very high for all thrash bands. You can't sound any meaner, more aggressive or more evil than this!

Let's get this straight, Persecution Mania is a thrash classic and one that if any avowed thrash fan doesn't already own should run to the nearest nuclear shelter. It's that good, not your typical one-dimensional, A to B thrash album. Frank Godsdzik is to thank for the guitar work, and Angelripper remains the most important part of Sodom's sound and image, they would sound totally different with another singer/bassist, regardless of their line-up changes. This is without a doubt my favorite thrash album out of Germany, along with Persecution Mania. Thrash hardly gets better, amazing blistering riffs and leads, punk driven song structures but with a lot of metal balls. One man made this possible, Frank Blackfire (on guitars), listen to the album and you'll see why this is Sodom's best.

For some reason, this record wasn't as successful as Sodom's previous two full lengths, people say things like "they went more commercial" or "not fast enough". Sure they strayed from the formula, but this is still very solid thrash Sodom. Criminally underrated album, but still a must for every thrash fan. This will not disappoint you!

For a few months, I've been finding that I don't like black metal as much as I thought I did (with the exception of folk/black metal). However, a few bands have managed to spark up my interest a little bit, one of these bands being Darkestrah. Darkestrah is one of the very few heavy metal bands from Kyrgyzstan, although they've recently relocated to Germany. The band's latest album, The Great Silk Road, contains epic black metal suites much like their other work. This album is definitely among the year's best releases.

Beware! German thrashers are back in force, but this time with more than a surprise. I personally didn't expect to hear so much harmonizing, melodies and acoustic sounds, but this album kicks ass nonetheless. It still sounds like Destruction. Schmier has been doing this for decades and still knows what he is doing. This album is different but it will still grab you by the balls. Keep in mind that this is a promo release so you'll hear Schmier say a little something on every song. To remind you to go buy the CD when it comes out! It's Amazing!
