Beware! German thrashers are back in force, but this time with more than a surprise. I personally didn't expect to hear so much harmonizing, melodies and acoustic sounds, but this album kicks ass nonetheless. It still sounds like Destruction. Schmier has been doing this for decades and still knows what he is doing. This album is different but it will still grab you by the balls. Keep in mind that this is a promo release so you'll hear Schmier say a little something on every song. To remind you to go buy the CD when it comes out! It's Amazing!

Absu - Barathrum V.I.T.R.I.O.L.

WOW, this album completely took me by surprise. Like many others I'm sure, I started getting into Absu through their "Tara" album; that's all anybody would talk about. Then I sorta put the fact that they did death metal before the blackened thrash that was to come later in the back of my mind for I just love death metal, specially the old stuff. I have never once heard Barathrum V.I.T.R.I.O.L. recommended or even mentioned in OSDM threads, so I didn't know what to expect. I'll tell you what I got though: raw, dark as fuck, incredible death metal. Oh, and I forgot to mention that the three live bonus tracks are fuckin great.

You gotta admit that Trigger the Bloodshed is an extremely generic deathcore band name. Plus, the band's image just shouts deathcore. However, these guys are a million times better than that boring deathcore crap that's out there today. First of all, there isn't an overdose of breakdowns. Next, they're fucking brutal. And then there's the vocals. Deep vocals laced with grindcore-style vocals and none of that pig squealing bullshit. Trigger the Bloodshed also uses some ambiance in their tracks. Overall, this band is like a cross between Suffocation, Nile and Napalm Death. Here's the band's debut album Purgation.

For some reason, this great "tech" thrash (imo, even in the early days) band's last album wasn't as praised as their early stuff. I'm sure it was the same back in their early days, the stuff sounds a lot better after a couple decades. Bottom line : Sadus are still thrashin' and this album is definitely worth the while. Not to be compared to Swallowed In Black but a very solid listen nonetheless. Fast, technical, aggressive. Enjoy!

(United Kingdom) Grindcore/Death

This album is an idiosyncratic blast of old school grindcore mixing the traditional sound of bands like Napalm Death and Nasum with some more unique elements including black metal-tinged sections, banjos, heavy metal solos and some good old fashioned toe-tapping melodies. In other words, it's good. Enjoy.

This is a great underrated east coast thrash band from Jersey City. They only had two full lengths and I personally prefer this one. It's good, old school thrash, a la early Exodus/Zetro days. A fun listen.

When it comes to extreme metal, Italians can never go wrong. Hour of Penance provides perfectly good evidence to prove this point. Unbelievably brutal and just as technical, the ten tracks on The Vile Conception are sure to make you headbang like a maniac. The only flaw in this album is the end of the last song...when it ends. Can you say "Best of 2008"?

Consistent death metal band Unleashed still sound like what Unleashed stand for: Tremendous power, relatively simple, but all the more effective riffing, subtle, but cool melodies and now also great guitar solos. One of my favourite european death metal acts. Midvinterblot is their 8th album and probably their best to date.

You have to listen to this album to know who these guys are and what they sound like. Instrumental thinkin man's metal would be a close description, except their music is way beyond that. It's so progressive and melodic yet so intense at the same time you're not gonna wanna stop it. Julian Chan listened to this last night and his jaw dropped about 2.5 feet in total by the end of the album. "THIS IS BEYOND DREAM THEATER" he said. Enjoy.
