It's no surprise that Enslaved has changed their from viking black metal sound to progressive metal over the years.  Vertebrae, the band's newest release, finds a perfect spot between the two genres.  The album has black metal riffage and vocals and although it lacks viking lyrics, it manages to create the viking atmosphere excellently.  On the prog side, it sounds like the guys have been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd lately.  Both the keyboards and the clean vocals have a sound quite similar to that of the prog rock gods.

Antaeus - Blood Libels (2006)

Not so long ago, I knew absolutely nothing about black metal and held similar views to many I’ve seen around the group “lack of variation, production sounds like it was recorded in a tin can, boring riffs, ect.” Well, and then I gave “Blood Libels” a spin and it surprised the hell out of me how this genre so misunderstood by myself can be so awesome and extreme. Blood Libels remains just as crushing now that I’ve dabbled in a good deal of black metal and understand the sound being conveyed. I recommend this album to ANYONE that has a taste for extreme music, whether they like black metal or not.

Sadistic Intent - Ancient Black Earth (2007)

Sadistic Intent is a death metal band from California that has been a staple of the underground since 1987. This is a compilation that contains the "Ancient Black Earth" EP (tracks 1 - 3), the "Resurrection" EP (tracks 6 - 11), and three covers (Slayer, Possessed, Celtic Frost). For fans of Possessed, Morbid Angel, The Chasm, Mortem, Pentacle, Venom, (early) Bathory, (early) Sepultura, Kreator, Sacrifice (can), Slaughter, etc. etc. If you like any of those bands, then Sadistic Intent is definitely right up your alley. Along with Mortem, The Chasm, Arghoslent, Necros Christos, and Pentacle, they have been one of the only death metal bands still around who have been able to recreate the sound and atmosphere of death metal in a unique way that is still heavily indebted to, and has not lost touch with, the true ancient spirit of the music.

Again, this is some really heavy progressive death metal. These french metalheads didn't fail to deliver after 3 years. Their 4th studio album drifts a little from their early stuff but still punchy, riffy, with good rhythms and lyrics to go along. Again, this band isn't about any guitar noodling or brutal blast beats, their arrangements are wicked good but without going over the top. Simple techniques and bone crushing drum beats make you wanna headbang infinitely. Enjoy!

What's this? Metalcore? Maybe you want to read the group description again...Anyway, as most regulars in the group would know, Bleeding Through is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. Call me a n00b, but I was hopefully waiting for this album ever since I heard the news earlier this year. Fortunately, Bleeding Through did not disappoint. This is progressive instrumental melotech-thrash (I know), and it doesn't get any better. Crazy blistering leads, time signatures and flavorful arrangements with some breath taking melodies make this a must for all instrumental metal fans. Jeff Loomis might just be one of the best metal guitarists out there today. Enjoy responsibly.
