The Ocean - Heliocentric (2010)

The Ocean takes a whole new musical direction on Heliocentric. This new album is much more diverse than the previous three albums. Heliocentric ranges from soft songs featuring piano to heavy sludge tracks. Although fluXion and the second disc of Precambrian have been described as atmospheric and symphonic, both are still rather abrasive and come nowhere close to the level that Heliocentric is on. The lyrics of this album revolve around a debate between science and religion, from the perspective of science. A follow-up album, Anthropocentric, which takes the religious point of view will be released later this year.

Bloody Panda - Summon [2009]

Bloody Panda... never had heard of them and had it not been for sake of lucky curiosity I would have never checked them out. After all, it's a pretty dumb name for such an incredible band. "Summon" is some kind of a monumental release, capturing everything that great doom metal should: crushing atmosphere and epic booming riffs. Yep, this is an album that you can really DOOM to, with influences ranging from the hypnotic aesthetics and drone of Sunn O))), to the epic use of organs found in Skepticism, to the intense tormenting atmosphere of Moss. I expect this band to be a big name in extreme doom very soon.

This band redefined sludge and stoner metal for me. This is an instant classic that will grab you by the nuts and won't let go until you hear the constant trippy bass line in that last track then will make you play it over and over. These are the bassist and drummer that joined The Melvins, but don't be mistaken, Big Business have been around before they joined the other band and I personally prefer them to The Melvins. You might find out why, only if you listen.

It should be known that there is no such thing as a bad Neurosis side project. Steve Von Till's work under the name Harvestman is strong evidence. In a Dark Tongue, Harvestman's sophomore effort, features a cross between Neurosis' brand of sludge and northwestern US folk metal.
