Peste Noire - Ballade cuntre lo Anemi Francor (2009)

I may be biased (or unreliable in this recommendation) since this is the first Peste Noire album I have heard, but I will say this much: it's mastery of black metal and it blew me away.

This is a part of the "elite" black metal albums that have come out this year along with others like the new efforts from Peste Noir, Fen, and Drowning the Light. Blut aus Nord bring an interesting mix of progressiveness, hints of melody, and black metal to the table for a great listen.

This young French outfit finally put out their debut, which is beyond what your average brutal death/grindcore effort sounds like. It's moderately technical, but the riffs just keep on coming at you. No slow/fake brutal interludes, its all very thrashy. Imagine early Monstrosity or Decapitated with some fun grind attitude. This is an album for extrem metal lovers, do not get it if you dont like ferocious death metal.

Trepalium is a great that death metal band that does some pretty interesting sound with the general brutal smack you in the face sound by adding in jazz, progressive, and even funk influences. In my opinion it is a great listen and a must have for death metal fanatics. In short this album is if A Clock Work Orange was published as an album instead.

Antaeus - Blood Libels (2006)

Not so long ago, I knew absolutely nothing about black metal and held similar views to many I’ve seen around the group “lack of variation, production sounds like it was recorded in a tin can, boring riffs, ect.” Well, and then I gave “Blood Libels” a spin and it surprised the hell out of me how this genre so misunderstood by myself can be so awesome and extreme. Blood Libels remains just as crushing now that I’ve dabbled in a good deal of black metal and understand the sound being conveyed. I recommend this album to ANYONE that has a taste for extreme music, whether they like black metal or not.

Again, this is some really heavy progressive death metal. These french metalheads didn't fail to deliver after 3 years. Their 4th studio album drifts a little from their early stuff but still punchy, riffy, with good rhythms and lyrics to go along. Again, this band isn't about any guitar noodling or brutal blast beats, their arrangements are wicked good but without going over the top. Simple techniques and bone crushing drum beats make you wanna headbang infinitely. Enjoy!

After listening to Kragens, I can actually say that there's at least one French metal band I enjoy. Kragens of France plays a brand of power/thrash quite similar to that of Nevermore. However, Kragens vocalist Renaud Espeche (who sounds like a cross between Warrel Dane and Roy Khan) also employs the use of harsh vocals. Infight is the band's third full-length release. I really don't have much else to say, but listen, headbang, and enjoy!

Very groovy, heavy and moody. These French metalheads pull off an overall sound that's kind of hard to classify. This album is without a doubt their best to date. Gojira play a sort of progressive death metal that makes you feel like you're being stepped on by a giant, or punched in the face by hellboy. Very atmospheric, industrial, doomy, yet technical at times. The musiciaship is great. This is not music with solos or other instrumental noodling but rather a team effort with lots of groovy rythms and precise playing between the musicians. This band works like a machine. I would strongly recommend The Link Alive DVD, i got it a few days ago and i've been watching it everyday since.
